Equipment and Setup

 Stable Internet Connection:

  • Ensure you have a reliable and fast internet connection to prevent disruptions during the class.

Laptop or iPad:

  • Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in.
  • Update your operating system and apps to the latest versions.

Camera and Microphone:

  • Use the built-in camera and microphone on your device. If the quality isn't sufficient, consider using an external webcam and microphone.

Software:

  • Install Zoom video conferencing app.
  • Create an account and familiarize yourself with the software's features, such as muting/unmuting, screen sharing, and chat.

Quiet Space:

  • Set up in a quiet room with minimal distractions.
  • Ensure good lighting so the instructor can see you and your dog clearly.

Preparing your surroundings

 Training Area:

  • Choose a spacious area where your dog can move around comfortably.
  • Remove any potential hazards or distractions.

Training Supplies:

  • Have treats, a clicker, toys, and any other training aids ready.
  • Keep a leash and collar nearby if needed.

Notes and Materials:

  • Have a notebook and pen to jot down important points.
  • If the instructor provided any materials beforehand, have them printed or accessible on your device.

During Class

 Camera Positioning:

  • Position your device so the instructor can see both you and your dog clearly.
  • Test the camera angle beforehand to ensure it's suitable.

Engagement:

  • Actively participate and ask questions if you're unsure about any techniques.
  • Follow the instructor's directions closely.

Post Class

 Practice:

  • Practice the techniques learned during the class regularly with your dog.
  • Follow any homework or additional instructions provided by the instructor.

Feedback:

  • Provide feedback to the instructor to help improve future sessions.
  • Stay in touch with the instructor for any follow-up questions or clarifications.

Optional Enhancements

 Headphones:

  • Use wireless headphones to reduce background noise and improve audio clarity.

Stand or Tripod:

  • Use a stand or tripod for your device to maintain a steady camera angle. These are economical and you might be glad you have it for your next group family photo opportunity! There are many different brands, but you can get them for as little as $15 at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/UBeesize-Extendable-Bluetooth-Aluminum-Lightweight/

Screen Mirroring:

  • Using can mirror your smaller device to a compatible TV for a larger viewing screen. Visit here for tips on doing that:  How to Mirror a Laptop to a TV (lifewire.com) and How to Mirror Android to TV (Connect Your Phone Wirelessly) (lifewire.com) and How to mirror an iPhone to your TV | Tom's Guide (tomsguide.com)

Backup Device:

  • Have a backup device ready in case of technical issues with your primary device.

By following these steps, you can create an effective and engaging environment for a virtual dog training class at home.
